Basically, all that is, is joining two layers (then applying some effect to the layer, which I forget, but it's pretty easy) in either photoshop or gimp. In simple terms, load each photo you want to 'join' on a separate layer, then goto to the layer effects and start trying each of the effects.

Btw, here is a tutorial to accomplish something like you want, should get you to your original idea though.

Good Luck,
-Brian

Check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZSsSWPsW04
It shows you how to blend two pictures, like the one you posted.

Hello Boris,

Here's an excellent link with a bunch tutorials on the page, maybe the "Fading to Background" or "Feathering a Selection." I think I have some other tutorials but I am not sure, I would need to look.

Tutorial Link

Here are three more links, the reason, each Author has their own idea of creating a particular tutorial, some are easier, some use different tools. Sometimes I will use 2-3 different tutorials for one project.

Fading Image to Background

Feathering Photos Together for Digital Scrapbooking

Pixel's Web Works Faded Edges Tutorial

Happy Painting!
