Instead of needing new ideas, why not opt for "new content" - something worth linking to. If its unique, quality and relevant to your niche, it would surely pay off once other sites link to it naturally.

Social Media is a good venue to get traffic from (as long as theyr are targeted) but they don't add any benefits SEO-wise as most are nofollow. If any value, it adds to diversity of your link profile - and that's about it.

Go for normal directory and give paid option as well for users who are interested in submitting their website in your directory.
once it will start getting good volume of visitors then make it total paid.
