So far about 1/3 of the applications arent working properly, and the facebook community is beginning to get upset. I'm sure in time this will be sorted out, but so far it's a bit of an underwhemling experience.
I never got on the MySpace bandwagon. I found it very clumsy and cumbersome and extremely difficult to browse. Facebook is clean, elegant and extremely easy to use. Most importantly for Internet Marketers, there's also a great opportunity to make some money.
The Facebook Platform is a long time coming - any developper company can make available their own widgets to Facebook users, who then are allowed to customize their page with whatever they like. Apple has become extremely popular with users by introducing their iLike application, a tool that allows users to integrate their already-listed favourite music artists with information supplied by iLike such as available mp3s, upcoming concerts, and connections to others with similar tastes. Imagine the marketing information (let alone mp3 sales) Apple is going to get from this!
It's a genius idea, Facebook. Allow users to get hooked on your product, make it simple and clean to use, let your base grow until you have millions of users all familiar with your service and then BANG! sell out to a dozens of companies who want to milk your exclusive traffic base.
As far as users making money off Facebook, I've seen no evidence of that and I doubt that the average user will. It seems like the developpers of these applications simply want to brand their products and get traffic - and of course, traffic is currency in SEM.
