Okay, so this has been a pretty horrible day --

EXCEPT -- I decided I would not give up if I had 75 hits to my site... and there were 201 --

Okay, so do you think that's because of sending my site to the directories?
One said it had listed my site. Which surprised me that it was so fast.

Wow, that's meant "in any case"
I mean, wow.

Thank you for this thread.

I have a new question for you guys...

what's the best way of making money on the internet? This was a bad day because I had to wait for Senior Transport, which was so late that it picked me up at the same time my Chapter 13 hearing was supposed to start...

So the Chapter 13 trustee was excessively irritated and made me wait tilll everyone was done (but one nice lady who let me go ahead) so by then my tetanus was tightening up my muscles and I couldn't think straight anymore...

So, clearly it would be good to not be so impoverished.
LOL, but true.

Could be. For each directory and search engine you add your URL to, you can a expect to be visisted by them.

On some days I see a HUGE spike in my traffic and check out my stats program, and find that Google, Yahoo, MSN, Inktomi, Alexa, and a few others have crawled my site on the same day. And if your site has alot to crawl, WOW. Lotsa hits, but of course, not from real people. But I am still glad to be regularly crawled by the SEs.

Oh. I see.

But if a particular page has a lot of hits, then the same bot wouldn't be visiting it over and over, right?????

Does your stats package not give you the referrer, ie the url the visitor came from? If your referers are all unique and not from Inktomi slurp, googlebot, etc then it would most likely be "real" visitors.

Hi Padawan,

I've just started a new directory, http://www.mammoth-directory.com . It's brand new and very empty at the moment. Please could you add this to your list.

Although it doesn't have any PR at the moment, I have just added links to it from some of my high PR sites, so it should get some soon.

Thanks.

I was having a great time fixing my web site in relation to things that I thought about as a result of Padwan's post about directories...

then I found the DMOZ forum, and I was so stoked, like in awe and all, becasue Padawan had made it sound like a challenge and sort of neat.

So they liked my two questions and put the little stick pin thing on them... but then another editor removed my signature and said I was there to advertise.

I had looked at the site before I joined, and there were a lot of signatures. What was not readily apparant was that they all belonged to editors.

So I'm less stoked now.

Now I'm thinking about the DMOZ forum thread that said it takes 3 years to get listed in DMOZ...
3 years ???

With that kind of lead time, is anything in it relevant?
And, another thread said that for each accepted site, there are 19,999,999 waiting to be reviewed. (it said something like, "no lie, more than one mathematician worked the number out")

So if the directory is that large... I mean seriously, what good is it?

Well, I called them all a White Only Lunch Counter... so I expect they will DMOT my site.

Padawan,

In the future, do you plan on updating your submission service? I would be interested in spending a larger sum of money for an expanded number of links.

As I get to understand submitting a little better, I'm really amazed at how neat some of these directories are.

I blew a lot of them when I didn't understand how to submit. Oh well.

Just wanted to thank you again...

Did I tell you that I got into a huge "fight" with the DMOZ people at their forum... I was trying really hard to write good questions, and they were liking them... but, it all cratered.

Forget about those ones Karen - they have all became pay for inclusion directories now.
