lol, padawan i have a question for you.
My site is new i started making it a month ago and its not really 100% finished but it's done enough so i can start having visitors. I submitted my site to the 200 directories you first listed here on this topic and many other people listed many other directories to list to. If i list my site in all these directories, will my page get ranked by google? Because it seems to me i won't get traffic from directories because when ppl wanna find something they search on google but it seems to me directories are only for webmasters who want there site having more links to them. I submitted my site to all 200 of those directories and when i use link popularity check by i think alexa it only shows about 200 sites linking to mine but that's in total of 3 or 4 search engines so that makes only about 50 of those directories actually linking to mine. Y is that? and also my main question is if i list my site on all these directories i got maybe like 500 or 600 will my site get ranked by google and if so how long will it take?

At the time of the last, recent, toolbar PR update the site with that list on went from PR0 to PR4. Most of the links at that time were solely from the directory list so, whilst nothing is ever guaranteed from Google, it does seem likely that you will receive a page rank next time it is updated.

As these are free submissions, many of the directories take their time in listing your site, either due to heavy workload, or just to make their alternative paid options seem more desirable. Also, some search engines, especially Google, only show a small sample of the backlinks that they know you have.

If you are talking about page rank then you should see a change next time the toolbar PR gets updated which will possibly be at the end of July. If you mean ranking in the SERPS then building backlinks is a long and steady, on-going job that will move you up the rankings steadily if you stick to it - how long it will take depends on the competitiveness of the keyword(s) you are trying to rank for.

and by keywords what exactly do u mean, lots of people talk about it i don't really get it. you said it depends on what keywords i i try to rank for. How can i try and rank for a keyword? all i'm doing right now is getting as many links as i can to my site so when on go to my site with the google toolbar it will tell my my page is ranked. how do i choose keywords?

Yes, that's correct. No one knows exactly when a PR update will happen, but based on what it usually does, late July is the most likely time for the next update.

Getting links is only half of what you need to do - search engines need to see your site as relevant, not just popular. It's improtant to optimize each page of your site for your most important keywords. For tips on how to do this, click here.

Are you doing them in order?
Or are you doing the ones with the best ranking first?
Do you think it makes any difference?

I have just been editing my signature for about 45 minutes...
I'm not very good at these things.
I think it follows the rules now...
I have a question, is there a way to set our preferences in our control panel so that any thread when respond in, we get notified for?
I have been back to my control panel almost a dozen times... and I just am not sure...
I wish there were.

Yeah i've been doing the best first. I'm pretty sure you can set your settings to recieve a notification for every thread you participate in. have you checked your profile might be in there?

If I was submitting slowly I would work through one page at a time so I knew where I had got to. If you don't intend to submit to all of them then selecting the ones with the highest page rank may be best. Jayde, for example, is PR7 if I remember correctly, and have always accepted my submissionns in under about 5 hours

Your sig isn't quite right - it's pointing to "http:///" you need it to be "http://www.yoursite.com"

Two things:
I thought the better rank was the lower number, is that wrong?
It's the higher number that's better???
and... I'm unclear about what you mean about the signature...

hover over your sig link and look in your status bar. As you can see its not pointing to you site.
Yes the higher your page rank the better

Wow, thanks you guys!!!!!!
I didn't know that about the status bar (how to activate it)... and I always wondered what the name of that "box" was...
And, thanks about clarifying the rank number thing.
