I am new to this marketing thing. I have been marketing my website for a week now. The traffic to my site isn't bad, but not many people sign up. How long typically it does to have many ppl go to the site without me having to market every day?

Somewhere between years and never.

It's not a job for the impatient or anyone with a short attention span.

You could start doing something that is actually useful

Advertise in the places where the kind of people you are trying to attract already read at.

Make a signature and promote it every where. More importantly make put Url on social networks. They are free. You may take an example of Facebook or Myspace. They are good. But it takes time dude.. These are a few things that could help you.

How do you promote your site? Where do you promote it? What kind of services do you offer? What is current signup ratio? I believe these questions should be answered first

I thought the more successful you got the more you would have to market so as not to lose all the good work you've already done and to keep your competitors from overtaking you.

It really depends on your niche. Is it competitive or not? Marketing should be a continuous process. Competition is fierce in the web.

Cecille is right, in my opinion. So are the others, though. If you don't have time, you're not in the right field.

Unless you have money.

The BIG DOGS generally need to have patience (of this sort; I'm not saying they don't often start off with plans that will take years to effect) because they do have an advertising budget to start off with. This budget will usually help them sidestep the 'waiting game' we usually have to go through. These guys will often just invest a bunch of cash to start off with just to test their ROI and tweak their pages. I'm not recommending you do this, too, unless you're already independently wealthy...but if you don't have the patience to constantly build and let it play out for a year or more, then you'd better be somebody with a fat bank account who doesn't really have to.

Otherwise, what I think I hear you saying is pretty common. Once you do everything you can think of doing, what comes next? What if nothing happens?: What if...my site stays dead? The answer?

Do something else. Because believe me, there's always something else. Something you didn't think of. For me, the best things are the things that I can get into, every day. And don't forget to keep your site dandy -- tweak it constantly and find out where traffic is getting 'caught' in the flow. Keep thinking about it -- every day -- (yes, I am a freak) and ideas will flow to you.

Some ideas you haven't tried yet? I think my friend above said it correctly when he mentioned that you didn't bring up the kind of site or product you have or service you offer. That could change a lot; let us know and maybe we could shoot you ideas.

I loved it when somebody commented above, "It's not a job for the impatient or anyone with a short attention span.". Well said buddy! Yeah that's right! This takes a lot of determination and hard work. Online jobs are not just the 'sitting-pretty at home jobs' that many people have in mind.
