Hire a copywriter and do some A/B testing or multivariate testing.

or try and put yourself in your buyers' shoes - try really hard to see it their way and be (or make it seem you are) what they want you to be; that could be cheaper, faster, sexier... whatever it is that will push their button and open their wallet/purse up

what kind of advertisers are you writing ads for? there's so much diversity in what you can do

to read a brilliant book which really delineates the science of selling very well and is just as good to you as a telesales operator, a web marketer, an ad copy writer, an ad graphic designer, a field salesman, a store manager, a webmaster... anyone... look up "Soft selling in a hard world" by Jerry Vass. You can read about half the book for free online (it's so good he knows that people who read half of it will quite frequently go out and buy the whole thing).

Put a call of action in your ads like "apply now", or "buy now".

Make the ads very relevant to what you are selling and persuade them with 'eye catching keywords'. For example words like "scam" and powerful words like "revolutionary" grab peoples attention and are shown to icnrease click through rates drastically. Give it a try.

Ads can be seasonal. It should go along on what the season or holiday in that targeted market area. Try to make it short but catchy.

An ad looks like a chart form, a online game or others, and let your ad not looks like an AD

it really depends on the type of company you are working with... here are a few ideas. you might want to look at companies like eyeblaster.com and pointroll.com as they often product documents with information on advertising.
clear and concise call to action
make the consumer believe they need to visit now
images
make sure the ad fits the site its being placed on... to many advertiser create just one campaign but you need to think about the placement of the ad and the demograhic of that site.
consider rich media
