I'd also like to say that VirtuosiMedia has a great point. If I paid for a forum membership to access content and connect with individuals sharing a common point of view, I would expect the users to be real people. If I'm not paying, as long as the content is valuable to me I wouldn't care who posted it.

Its a good way to jump start the forum. Ive used these services before, the paid posters are usually pretty good, stay on and create lots of topics and really set a dynamic for your forum.

Hi scutari,

What might not ethical about it is that when a forum, say, has 1000 posts - what do you think if someone is paid to post 300 of them?

A "Hi, I like your post. Thank you." post - looks bad and too generic, doesn't it? That what many paid forum posters did.

But, I agree that some paid forum posters are better quality than the rest, and they do deliver forum posts and members organically.

This is a grey area, really.

Yes and no.

Its not really ethical since they aren't doing their own work.

But it is ok since you're basically paying for content and a basic 'jump start'.

Paying money will always give you a good jump, but you'll all end up in the same place in the end.
