Just curious about what the members of this forum think about directory submissions in general. Do you use web directories to advertise and boost your rankings? What have your results been like?

I do directory submissions. Most, and I mean 90% of them, aren't worth two cents. They're just crappy link farms that used link buying to get some PR to get interest from webmasters.

The other 10% are decent and worth the time to submit to.

But, I pay someone to submit, so if it's free, I'll drop some sites on it. It doesn't cost me much, so I'm not too concerned with the results.

As to directories that charge, that's a different matter. There are a *few* good ones out there. Many charge and don't send a lick of traffic. Again, they try to sell submissions based on PR rank rather than listing/traffic value.

I'd be FAR more willing to pay for a listing on a site that's for my industry over a general link collage any day--provided the traffic, incoming links and other requirements are there.

But, that's just my take.

Directories are good to gain one way links to your site. While submitting to directories you should always vary the link title and the description part to improve the website’s rankings for all of its important keywords.
There are some directories using blackhat techniques to block their PR from getting distrubted to linking sites. So, try to submit your site to the directories which share their PR.

I submit to on topic niche directories and have seen excellent results as far as PR, backlinks, indexing and SE Rankings are concerned.

I dont bother with general directories but the on topic ones are excellent.

I don't really use directories to get traffic but more just to get backlinks.

Directories are crap for getting traffic. Another problem with directories is that your site will be on a sub sub sub sub sub page with zero PR and a bunch of outbound links.

I as on AddURL the other day and I submitted to about 80 odd directories, all using phpLD (I believe). Am I just wasting my time? There were very general. I'd prefer some more on topic ones. Is it worth giving them a go?

niche directories are great, but there are a few good web directories which are general and benefit you in Google big time. They may put you on some new pages, but those pages will be indexed and count, if Google likes and trusts the directory in general.

Most of those of course are paid directories, once in a while a directory that is free will turn into a great paid directory, and those who got in early, can benefit from it.

But yeah, most directories are not good, which is why I am running http://www.directorycontest.com to see which ones to focus on and which ones to ignore.

In one way or other directory submissions do benefit and that's the reason people still prefer to do such submissions.
Personally I think free submissions are a waste of time as there is no guarantee regarding them.

yeah i will take you ages to do it by hand but well worth it IMO

but you best to outsource to someone there is people who have to software to do this really quickly and it doesnt cost the work

so outsource someone to do the dirty work for you....so you can spend your time doing your marketing.
