Manual submission to directories are by far the better strategy. You really don't have to submit to every directory out there. Here are some pointers to consider in submitting to directories (whether paid or free):

High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal form directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.

Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed

I do it by hand. Semi auto submission tools are good but totally automatic....I dont recommend it. Its useless to submit to those directories.

I keep reading conflicting information about whether submitting to directories is worth it, but I'm pretty sure it is. My traffic has been slowly growing, and I am on page one for a couple of search terms that have brought me several clients recently. I suspect that this is due to the directory submissions, since that's what I've been doing most of.

I'd say the best approach is to just do it widely, and by hand. And alternate it with other promotion campaigns, like commenting on blogs.

Certainly some free directories don't pass page rank, but some do. And some of them will grow after you have submitted, and start charging then. Do enough submissions and a few at least will bear fruit and bring long term rewards.

I'm lucky to have the time to do this. I can imagine it not being an option for more time-poor people. (I also find other sites and blogs of interest while scouring the directories, so it's not that boring.)

Why do directories SUCK?

1. Cause it is way tooo tiimmeee coonssuummiing waiitng for the submissions to be approved or declined. Often the webmasters dont even repont

2. Cause a lot of your submissions get rejected

3. You often have to pay up to get a link that passes PR what a RIIIP

4. If you somehow get your Pr passing link added to the directory your link will be on some remote part of the site whihc google may visit one every 3 months and has zero PR. There may also be tons of outbound links so no almost PR is passed. ..what a waste of tiiiimmeeee.

5. oh and the links arent even relavent so you will get penalized

I agree...it's really time consuming... :walkman:
