Hi,

I've been building a new site; after almost a decade in IT, I'd like to do more creative work on the side and hope that takes over. On that note, I'm decent with a camera, and have decided to start a portrait service.

http://seattle-portraits.com/Tips.html

I'm still working on the copy, and probably will be for a while. But if you look at the clothes and hair sections, and the [-] / [+] next to them, you can fold or expand sections. Is this a good idea? Am I going about it right way? ( I plan to move the js to external files so they'll be cached. ) Is there a downside to having [-] in the h2 tag? Seems like that could diminish the value of the section name?

I haven't got to it with this page http://seattle-portraits.com/Photosh...rocessing.html yet, but I'm planning to do the same thing, and add before/after for each type of enhancement I can do.

( PS - Sorry if this is in the wrong section ... I'm mostly curious how I did with the markup and javascript, so I thought this would be a good place to ask. )

Works well and looks good.

The expand/collapse sections is a nice touch and something I like to do on sites where articles are quite long, I tend to run it slightly differently though.
( and something I'm currently working on for a programming hints/tips/snippets site).
I'm working on collapsing all the other articles/tips whenever one is clicked and just leave headings, then when the current one is clicked again (to collapse it) set it back to showing snippets for all.

It looks like it will be a great site simply because it's built with the right intentions.

Very cool! At first I wondered 'Why?' as the article is already so short, but then I saw dummy text, so I'm guessing it's simply not finished. I really like the concept.

Question - does havinig [-] with formatting and javascript links in your h1 diminish the value of the real keywords in the tag?

I ask because I really like your idea, and might consider using it in my blog.

I shouldn't tell you the answer to this, dude. I keep getting found by people searching for you.

Seriously, what I would suggest you do is not to have anything showing by default, and then show the - sign to those with Javascript enabled; in other words, use Javascript to dynamically write to the - signs. That way, you don't have issues with those people who don't have Javascript enabled and that try to contract the sections (they won't even be able to try) and you avoid any search engine issues.

Or don't worry about it because it will make no difference whatsoever.

SEs tend to ignore punctuation and various other characters
