I was just wondering, what would you like to see in the next generation on CSS? I've always thought having gradients would be a really cool thing instead of images.

gradients - yes,, it could ease certain things..

also maybe navigation systems.. instead of aving to code them in css and thenin javascript.. if it can be done only in css it would be much more easier and better..

I believe CSS still has a long way to go to perfect positioning properties. Granted, the main issue in current implementations is the sketchy implementations by the browsers, but there is still room for the W3C to improve.

I would like to see better relative positioning. The idea that you can adjust the relative position of a block is great, but there is no way to override the default behavior that follow-on blocks assume their position based on the pre-adjusted position of the first block.

CSS also needs to ramp up its support for columnar format. I have seen some specifications for this in the CSS3 proposals, but we'll have to wait and see how it is implemented.

Of course, none of this means anything until Webmasters get over the "we have to take care of all browsers" mentality and cut off the slackers still running Netscape 4.X.

IMO, shoot Netscape. I think there should be ONE standard that all browsers need to conform to. If they can't do that, then sorry, they suck.

And on the CSS front: CSS is amazing. I can't really imagine not using it. CSS+HTML+PHP = amazing website. It's a match made in heaven...'cept that I'm an atheist...but meh. I am very interested in seeing where CSS will be going. Unfortunetly, the web standards will change once the new XHTML is approved....bleh, time to relearn webdesign.

It's only Netscape 4 that doesn't conform to the current standards (I'm not totally sure, but the main reason is because it's old. Both Netscape 6 and Mozilla Firefox are fully standards compliant (and Firefox is an excellent browser ).
