Web standards are important, and getting moreso every day. Tables for layout are out. There are many reasons to learn web standards and code your sites to adhere to them as much as you can. You don't have to become a 'standardista', but learning and coding for web standards will help you - and your clients. Yes, there's a learning curve, but a good web master never stops learning

Here is a list of some resources for learning about Web Standards and why they are important.

Along with Web Standards, you have to also grasp Usability and Accessibility (it's not JUST about the blind !)

It is now just over a year since a court first awarded damages to a blind user against the owners of a website he found inaccessible (Maguire vs SOCOG, August 2000)

i cant believe that court case. what kind of website was it like a doctor or hospital one? I can see why we should do it but to be legally liable to not provide adequate usability for the blind its a little scary.

The court case was against TARGET, a retail store. Their on-line store was the problem.

Three reasons to learn web standards:

1. It increase the chance of webpage to look good on all browsers.
2. Smaller page, free of junk thereby making you site faster to load, save hosting cost by reducing webspace usage + bandwidth.
3. And most important, search engine crawl your page easily giving your site more traffic.

I have found it allot of fun conforming with web standards and also moving from tables to pure css. It is a good practice, yes, you can get stuck on a layout issue at some point which will want you too pull your hair out, but very satisfying when you find the solution!

Its really just a plan by the powers that be to better manage the webs wild traits. Just think about how google would benefit if all websites for the most part were formatted similarly.

We try not to use tables for website. Now, how bout for pages that needs lots of tables. Like a time table structure. It will be extremely hard to use CSS method isnt it?

For something like that, for tabular DATA, tables are fine and you can still style them with CSS

Web standards should be the starting point for any good designer. It can be hard to start with, but is incredibly worthwhile now that I can produce accessible websites which conform to standards and are still attractive.

This is a great post, with lots of good links to some very important information.
