Hi, I would like to be able to have a user click an image map on my site, and pop up a 300x300 window in the center of the screen. I have accomplished this with javascript, but the problem is, it doenst work until i click the yellow bar at the top of IE and allow scripts to run.

Is there a way to accomplish this without making the user accept my script? thanks!

If there was, that would make the popup blocker a little useless....

Yeah, so it's 2006 and I can't have a link on my site that pops a 300 by 300 pixel window in the center of the end user's screen? WTF?

The problem with your question is the perspective you're looking at it from.

"I can't have a link on my site that pops a 300 by 300...?"

Step back and look at your situation from the user perspective. And before you jump to conclusions, go to a site like www.prowrestling.com and surf around (even if you're not interested in wrestling, watch what happens after a few pages).

You see those popups that get blocked? Or do you even see the odd one that gets through? Imagine if they all got through...for example, on a machine running Windows 2000 or earlier and without a popup blocker installed. Do you see how that might be annoying?

That doesn't even take into account the number of drive-by software installs that occur through the popup method.

That's why your popup isn't working. It's due to abuse of the concept.

The question that I have is...why do you need a popup window so badly that you can't put the same content above the fold on your page in a visible area?

Interesting. I thought there would be some way to get around it. Suppose the user decides to click a link on my site, wouldn't that itself be a valid form of knowing that the user wants to interact with my site?

I can see how blocking an automated request from the site would be beneficial, but what happens when the user's mouse action generates a request for a pop up?

thanks for the info

Popups are a nightmare and the beneficial ones are simply inundated by the bad ones. Nobody likes a site that opens doxens of other windows its a pain in the rear. Thus you get the popup blockers.

However you can confugure your popup blocker (you can in FF anyway) to allow popups from certain sites.

Because again, people can abuse it. For example, putting a bit of JS to open a popup when someone clicks on a link that's supposed to take them to another page in the site (i.e. it does both)

If you make it obvious enough that a popup window is supposed to open, and people trust your site, they will most likely disable their popup blocker for your site.
