Is there a way to set a hyperlink to open a link in a new tab (or if the browser does not allow this a new window).

Yep I mean in a new tab, in FireFox you can open links in a new tab (IE 7 has this I think) can the target be changed to open links in new tabs rather than windows (if the browser supports it of course)

Nothing yet, but when new browsers support CSS3 we will have the ability to tab link. Take a look at http://www.w3.org/TR/2004/WD-css3-hyperlinks-20040224/

Looks good to me

Is it really sad and geeky that I'm actually almost excited about CSS3 now?

I've never really liked the way <target="_blank"> screws up my tabbed browsing

Not sad or geeky, but I would suggest taking two aspirin and lying in a darkened room for a couple of hours

Not everybody uses, or even likes tabbed browsing. So to force windows to open in a tab is pointless.

Most browsers can be configured to open new windows in tabs or not. I think it should be left at that.

Hi together,

having switched from Mozilla (with Multizilla) to Firefox, the tab issue is something which bothers me.

Sad thing about firefox ist, that you CANNOT config the browser to open external links in a new tab (instead of a new window) IF the link has a "target=..." in it (what you know only after it happened).

This way some links open in a new tab and others (with "target") open in a new window.
The target option is a good way in websites to demand opening a new window(resp. tab).
Alas it's also not possible to move a new window back to a tab (like in Multizilla).

Now I end up to never just click on a link, but always having to use
"richtklick -> open in a new tab."
That's quite annoying.

I whished firefox would offer better support for tabbed browsing, particularly open ALL external links in a new tab, if I choosed this option.

Anybody out there who knows a quick solution?

regards

Ingo

YOu cannot make it open in a new tab just from the code. You can set it so the link makes it open in a new window, and if the user has tabbed browsing enabled and the setting that links open in a new tab, then thats the only way i know of to get it to open in a new tab

In firefox, If you want to make all links which open in a new window open in a new tab, do this:

  • Go to Tools > Options > Tabs > Links and make sure 'Load external links into a ' is set to New Tab.
  • Then in the address bar type 'about:config' and scroll down to 'browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground' and set the value to true.

This will make all links open in a new tab, not in a new window.

Hope this helps, Sean

You should know that target="" is being phased out by the W3C. I do not know if there is a satisfactory replacement for the tag, but it doesn't really matter. If the user wants to view links from your page they can open in a new window or tab themselves.
