Web 1.0: Static Html Web , no user interaction
Web 2.0: Dynamic websites, forums , contact forms, user interaction...
Web 3.0: The social web, with the rise of a lot of social networking sites, such as facebook, linkedin, youtube, myspace...

I think making web very simple and usefull for the user is the best choice.(a good example is craiglist)
WEB 2.0 will go away in time.

When the term "web 2.0" was first coined it referred to dynamically update clientside pages -- i.e, AJAX.
Now it's become such a ubiquitous marketing term that it means whatever the speaker wants it to mean. Just marketing lingo.

It's really hard to define. I suspect it has something to do with all the "interactive" websites that are available nowadays. It's something to do with websites that go beyond the basic, static website.

Here is what wikipedia has to say about web 2.o
I like this part: " Some technology experts, notably Tim Berners-Lee, have questioned whether one can use the term in any meaningful way, since many of the technology components of "Web 2.0" have existed since the early days of the Web."

Web 2.0 is an obscure concept. There is no official documentation, it is currently not supported by the W3C, and at this point it is not a standard. But as many in this thread have pointed out is such a great marketing term, the W3C will e mbrace it in the near future. Ah yes, obnoxiously big buttons, 3 colored layouts, and social networks... I hate it.

This is old news ( nov. 2005 ) , if they were gonna embrace it, why is it taking so much time?

Not sure were it came from, but a lot of people use the word Web 2.0 as in the design of websites. Looking more 3D and glossy?

people use web 2.0 to mean different things.
1) a certain style of design, simple but classy
2) a dynamic site rather than a static one (not a good definition IMO)
3) a site that makes good extensive use of AJAX (best definition IMO)
Examples of 3 are many of the google tools, google documents, gmail etc.

Web 3.0? I thought that the social web was still a part of 2.0. Isn't 3.0 still theoretical, with users contributing code and such. the best i've heard it broken down is this:
web 1--read
web 2--read and write
web 3--read and write and execute

Well, I think it depends, as there is no standard definition for this. I personally see it when a major leap/improvement occurs, it's a new version.

It is a term describing changing trends in the use of world wide web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and its hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.
