Hi folks - first time visitor here to the forums.

Have a question for you. I made a site that is focused around a tabbed body. - I attached the top part to the thread. I what I want to be able to do, is CTRL+F to find elements throughout the table of contents, have it go tot he tab, and highlight (regular feature) the result.

Right now I can easily CTRL+F elements in the tab that I currently have open, but is there any way to implement a solution to search across tabs? I can't for the life of my think of anything - but I really need to be able to do this - or at least search content within the tabbed table.

Any suggestions?

Much appreciated!

You'd need to tell us more about what you're doing, but something else concerns me quite a bit: Don't screw with my CTRL+F dude. I'd be critically irritated at a site which disabled my browser's normal CTRL+F functionality. Try a different key combo.

To help us out a bit, try providing greater detail about what you've done to search within a single tab.

I'm not trying to edit the CTRL+F function, I'm trying to enable it on the site. It's located on my companies Intranet - so it's not live on the web for the world to see.

Basically I have a table of clients separated alphabetically (by tabs).

I want the employees to be able to go to the index page where the tabbed content is - Hit CTRL+F type in the client name, and have it find the client name in the table - because ultimately, the client name is a link to the page of details for that customer.

So when the employee is on the default tab "#" I want them be be able to CTRL+F "Client XYZ" and have the "X" tab "activate," ultimatley listing all the clients whose names begin with "X" and highlight - business as usual for the CTRL+F feature.

The problem that I am having is getting it to go across all of the tabs.

There has to be a way to do this - LOL

Well, thanks for not messing with my CTRL+F

How are you doing the search of the current tab now -- that's what you need to extend, so I need some basis from which to work.

Not quite sure what you mean, but I think I know how to answer - right now when an employee goes to a tab the can CTRL+F the content on that tab alone - that works great. But they would manually have the change the tab in order to search for the results on a different tab. I want the tab to change automatically and find the desired search.

Oh, oh, oh. What you're saying, if I have it right, is that the way that CTRL+F works by default in the browser is to search the visible content, but you want to modify it to search the hidden content as well. That'd be a pain in the butt and fairly difficult. It'd be better to write a search on the page itself which tweaked to the right tab based on users' entries. Strong javascript needed, but there may be scripts out there which will do it for you.

Yeah - I thought Javascript was going to be the way to go - but I wasn't sure. But yes, you have it right - I want it to 'tweak' over to the correct tab...

and my next question, you know I'm going to ask it.... any ideas where to find such a script?

haha

None at all. I'd try a Google search. Oh, come to think of it I believe that scriptaculous and Yahoo's stuff has features for this, but I haven't used them...Well, probably not the search. Better to search around to see if others have done it.

Otherwise, on to the coding yourself...

It's impossible to search pages that aren't loaded. You are going to have to create a search feature if you want to do a search like that.
