Ok I understand the basics of tables, but I dont know how to do certain layouts.

I want to have 3 rows. the first & last row is the full width of table. But on the second row is 2 columns one thinner than the other. Sort of like the postbit on these forums.

Do you understand? If so please give me some help

Unless you're using the table strictly for DATA, you should NOT use tables for LAYOUT at all !

Yet you're quite happy to indulge in a website which could easily convert its over-eccentric use of table tags and mishapped markup to something more standard. Instead of simply yelling at the student of markup, how about pointing him or her in the standardised direction?

Andy; please use site references such as http://www.htmldog.com/ which are a rich source of markup and styling. Also search the web for "standards compliance design". If you are seriously considering web design as a career or a hobby, then please at least buy a book from Amazon or such like.

Excuse me ? What ARE you talking about ??

There are a TON of resources located in the stickies if one takes the time to READ THEM. We put them there for exactly that reason.

Forums.

Stickies alone mean nothing. There are many resources available, but there is no direct promotion of these resources. Then people complain that amateurs are making fundamental mistakes.

It's about time we advertised properly to the generations of web designers.

Forums.
Oh, so you suggest I stop using forums, 99% of which are tables-based, just because they use tables ?? Sorry, not feasible. I don't put forums in the same category as 'web sites' of the usual variety. Forums are mostly pre-packaged and you get what you get.

Well then, stickies AND using the SEARCH FUNCTION. These types of questions are asked over, and over, and over. If members would try LOOKING before they ask a question, they just might find their answer straight away without having to wait for another member to answer. Then there's good old search engines.. you can find virtually ANYTHING if you at least TRY looking. I'm a firm believer in trying to find and learn on your own FIRST before asking someone to hand you the answer on a silver platter - you learn NOTHING that way.

I am sure this theme didn't come pre-packaged. Most popular forum administrators run a custom theme, therefore why not construct it properly in the first place? I did not suggest you stop using forums, I simply pointed out your constant anti-tables attitude which you insist on ramming down people's throats yet you find no issues in using services which betray your very "principles". No matter how you look at it, the table element is being raped in forum themes.

It would be easier for everyone if the stickies were made more apparent or given focus. Adding a "Does this topic exist?" then a search feature would indicate to new members that they should first seek out their issues. On the other hand, numerous copies of past topics appear often in forums and seem to drive the forums. I too am a firm believer in learning for yourself, but not everyone has the same drive. So we should facilitate them to find an answer, but not directly solve their problems.

You forgot to close the tags in there blktallos.
