Hi All -

Was just writing about cross platform, open source (free) editors and thought I'd see which ones you use and like. Of course, you probably haven't tried them all... but then again maybe in my list of four (or others you might know of), you might find a new one to "run through the mill."

Free editing programs I've tried -- which do you like (take poll)?:

• Kompozer - Cross platform with full WYSIWYG editing. Probably the easiest to use of the three... but don't rely on WYSIWYG at first... learn to code. Use "the code," Luke. (Note -- Kompozer is a bug fix version of NVU which was kind of shakey -- see Features here).
• Amaya - the W3C.org's official cross platform editor, it forces you to write XHTML properly (and thus teaches it to you as you code).
• JEDIT - A technical programmers first choice, it features hundreds of plugins (see comparison article Amaya versus JEDIT).
• Aptana - Pick this one if you really want to flex your muscles and start learning to program with AJAX (see overview tutorial).

Notepad++ is opensource isnt it? Regardless thats what I use and it gets my vote.

I would say Aptana was the best out of the ones you listed. As far as open source editors, i prefer Gvim. I can use it on Linux, Windows, or from my USB drive

I like Notepad++. It also runs off a flash drive, so it's easy to take around. It uses very little memory, so you can run it in the background while you're doing something else. It also has most of the features that JEdit has. I just don't like the way that JEdit looks, and it runs in Java, so it takes up much of my computer's memory.

Not to take away from the discussion but I use only the most basic aspects of Notepad++, I just like it because of its low memory usage and simplicity, plus the fact I didnt have to pay for it!

But what features in notepad++ or any other Source Editor do you guys use alot? Like macros or what? I have really found a use for that. Just seeing if im missing out on any cool features

EDIT: oh and the split screen editing is nice too

I downloaded Notepad++. It's okay. Not quite as good as the closed source editors UltraEdit-32 or Komodo-Edit.

Is there a way to make Notepad++ open more than one window? I've tried different way to open a file in another instance but it keeps opening a new tab in the first instance. Very irritating.

Yeh its not a new window but it splits the screen in half. Right click a tab and click "Go to another view".

I don't want a split screen. I open a lot of files sometimes and want multiple windows. One for text files and one for programming. I guess it will be okay for some things, but I will stick with UltraEdit for most.

Notepad++ , it should be added to the poll above, I'm sure it win by a landslide.

I'm confused. The original poster listed some great HTML editors that extends into programming tools, while Notepad++ is a text editor that can do HTML. Notepad++ does do some great things with the text though, like formatting.

Yeah, Notepad++ doesn't have any of the extended programming tools that some of the other editors do, but that's what makes it nice and light and easy to use. There's nothing to get into your way when you're trying to get something done really quickly. If you want to get some really advanced programming in, then yes, get a different editor.
