Can anyone tell me how exactly do I edit a swf file? I have downloaded a decompiler and got the fla source. I am using Adobe Flash CS3 to edit it.

I'm really stuck with this and any advise would be greatly appreciated.

You can't directly edit a SWF file. Depending on the decompiler you're using, you may still have limited editing capabilities, depends on what you're trying to edit. Many decompilers won't decompile actionscript, others won't keep tweens, they turn them into frame-by-frame animations.

What are you trying to change ?

Why did you have to decompile the swf to get the (editable) fla? Sounds like the fla should have been provided. WHere are you getting it from? They might let you have the fla directly.

This mean that you haven't the copyright to edit the .swf file because you get the .swf and not the .fla, you have probaly tooked it from a website, that the creator have spend a lot of time to create this animation. Even if you use a decompiler, you won't be able to have the original .fla, i promesse you, because decompiler aren't this powerfull.

Ok, lets clear a few things up here....I purchased the template online - and the download includes the .swf files plus the .fla files.

So being new to flash, I looked on the interent and a few sites stated you needed a decompiler - hence the decompiler...

But when I try to edit the text COMPANY NAME, using Adobe Flash CS3, I can edit the text but the file doesnt work as when I got it?? So I must be doing something wrong - what I don't know.

Well, you will need the decompiler if you don't have the original .FLa, but once you have you don't need the decompiler.

Do you have tried to directly edit in the original .fla and save it in .swf?

P.S: sorry for my last reply.

Ok, lets try an answer in ENGLISH....

Tony, if you have the FLA file, then there is no need for the decompilier. You only need to edit the FLA file in the proper place to change the text.

Once you have edited the FLA file, you need to PUBLISH the file to re-create the SWF.

Sorry to say this, but please don't expect everyone visiting professional forums to be native english speakers. Atleast a quarter of most forum members are from India. Afterall we are able to speak this much English. You won't be even able to utter a single word from our mother tongue.

@geester: There is a softwares called Sothink SWF Decompiler that will help you edit swf. Be warned that it is illegal to decompile SWF, if you don't have proper permission from its owner.
