Never attempted a real estate site before. . . my client wants to link to MLS and I haven't the first clue about how to do this. Can somebody please hold my hand? What steps do I need to take - what do I need to do first?

The homepage for Multiple Listing Service, or MLS, is: www.mlsonline.com. The realtor should have already had that contact information, but if you contact them they should already have the code for their search function ready to plug in to your page. Make sure you and the realtor look over their Terms of Service.

Forgot to mention, since your realtor pays for listings to be put into MLS, each listing should have its own code. When you contact them, be sure to ask about putting the realtor's listings as first hits (which should be a bit of JavaScript code, an onload function when the hits page is created from the search function).
