I prefer Photoshop for the actual editing, but then, I prefer PSP for saving files for the web and optimizing them and stuff like that.

$600 vs. $79 (or less)
Paint Shop Pro has 90% of Photoshop's features, runs most 3rd party filters built for Photoshop and has many features Photoshop doesn't (e.g., scripting support).
Oh, and then there is the issue of $600 vs. $79 (or less)
In the old days, I would agree that PSP was a less mature, less capable application. But since JASC released version 7, and particularly with version 8.10, the ability to arbitrarily declare Photoshop "the very best" grows more tenuous.
That said, it will be years before any application unseats Photoshop as the most widely-used professional-level imaging software application. It secured an incredible lead in the marketplace.
.... but then there is Netscape. I digress.

No offense taken. I don't work at JASC. But then again, what was it about Paintshop that disappointed you? Do you have specific details where you thought the software didn't measure up?
Any software takes time to learn and I would you to consider the possibility that you were comparing your newbie knowledge of PSP to your obviously experienced, cavernous and masterful knowledge of Photoshop.
Possible?

yes its possible, but in paintshop theres nothing extraordinary.... Interface is esay to learn, but lots of the tasks took twice more time, plus it ran much slower for some reason.
i think photoshop is much more capable too.

Pocketbook was an issue with me, I am sure Adobe Photoshop is a great program, but there is Macromedia also! I purchased PSP a few years ago and am well satisfied except with PSP 8.1, very disappointed with the software, yes it does run slow.
Best Wishes,
Giselle

I used to have Paintshop, but upgraded to Photoshop. The upgrade was well worth it.
I do have fond memories of Paintshop...but Photoshop wins.

I prefer photoshop for jpeg because its supposed to give better quality for the file size.
I don't know how it compares to PSP nowadays though.

I like photo shop, but then again i've never used Paint shop. In reply to Montero and Kyrnt, I think that when your learning a new piece of software it's always going to be slower to do thing than in a program you already know. It's hard to make a transition from one to another. I would say most users will stay with the first package they are introduced to. Unless there looking for something better and willing to learn it to it's fullest extent.
Did that make any sence??

I love my PS. I used to have PSP because that was all I could afford, after trying PS I never looked back.

Photoshop is more capable, but more expensive so it does even out.
I use PSP7 and that works very well for me, I can make all the graphics I need and for me there are no limitations so I'm happy with it. And I got animation shop for free when I bought it

A lot of factors go into buying a piece of software, money for one and what the user's intentions are, plus their capablities, do they have the talent to even become a Van Gogh, perhaps they don't want to become a Van Gogh.
Folks we all need to come together as artists because there is a big Wedding coming up in 1 day and three weeks, we need to spruce this place up with some Wedding decorations!

For $ 79 you can't beat PaintShop Pro. Good program to start off with.
For quality work, you need quality refined software = Photoshop.
I would not settle for less.

When we got our new computer it had paintshop pro, and through school I learned how to use photoshop, there is quite a great deal that is different between them, but personally I think paintshop is a photoshop wanna-be.
Photoshop is not designed to be an image creation program, photoshop is an image editting program so don't base the comparison on that.
I have never found any other program that can out-do or even match the capabilities, speed, and asthetics of Photoshop, it just seems to work so well.

I prefer photoshop over paintshop, but when it comes to making animated gifs, i prefer jasc animation shop to adobe imageready.
The cool part i i have both paintshop and photoshop, so i can switch when needed
