I have used Swish Max, and, I must say, shelling out the price for Macromedia Flash is very much worth it, but both programs have their ups and downs.
In Macromedia, you can do anything for an animation, but some of the more complicated stuff can take a while to learn. Although, you can creat stuff like webcomics (Have you ever checked out http://www.homestarrunner.com ?) like the ones in that link. YOu can also do simple tweens, like moving from one spot to another.
In Swish, you can't do tweens, but it is a lot easier to do advanced text effects, and the only way to attempt to tween here is by putting the object to, say, the left, and then having it fly in from the right, but that's as close as you can get.
