I'm the same as Dave. I am more used to Fireworks, but I am sure Photoshop is better if I get used to it.

By the way, you could have made this a real poll!

Well, I actually think that they're equal. Neither one is better than the other.

The reasons for PSP:
---------------------------
I like the fact that it loads the different tools as you click them, rather than all at one.

IMO, Paint Shop Pro is more, erm, "user friendly." By that, I mean that it is more "pick up and go" instead of "install, and buy a few books, and read for an hour, and find 50 tutorials, and read them..."
---------------------------

The reasons for PS
---------------------------
There are TONS more tutorials for PS, meaning that there is much more that a beginner can read and do.

Now, even though PS doesn't have as many fill designs as PSP, there are move features that make up for that. Stuff like indents, shadows, etc
---------------------------

On another forum that I visit, one of the top Graphic Artists on that forum uses Paint Shop Pro 4, so, as you can see, it's all a matter of preference. Also, that Graphic Artist does some better work than some of the people with PS7.

There isn't a decent basis for saying that PS is better than PSP, or vice versa. Each program has its good points, and each has its bad points.

I guess that my point is: there is no one graphics program that is better than any othee graphics program.

But, if we're talking about animation, then I'd have to shoot straight for Flash MX, but since we're not talking about Animation, I won't get into that...

I agree, I find that I have a lot of little paint programs I use because they do that one thing none of the others do.

Okay I think I'm a bit partial to photoshop because I used it when it first came to windows (version 4). When I got back into doing graphics and web design, I naturally bought the newest version.

The first thing I noticed when I fired it up was that it was definitely less approachable than the 4 (and this from a person who was extremely experienced with 4). I definitely agree that there is a learning curve for someone who is new to photoshop. But then again I wouldn't expect someone who is new to programming to fire up Visual Studio and be productive with it right away. Just like VS is a professional tool, PS is a tool for professionals.

The new html generation tools make Photoshop perfect for web developers. I went from concept to html for my company website in two hours by using PS with Dreamweaver.

I must admit that I haven't used Fireworks much because I haven't had time to learn it.

A great open source tool for graphics is GIMP (www.gimp.org). Like photoshop it has a learning curve but it is an extremely powerful tool and I'd highly recommend it for someone who is just getting into graphics and may not have the resources to purchase one of the commercial tools. And when you want to upgrade to PS you can save your projects as PSDs.

Hey Crow...you should have turned this in to a real poll.

Anyway, I generally use Photoshop 6 and 7. 6 because that's what I have Eyecandy and Knockout for. I've been using photoshop for years (since version 4), and it's always been good to me.

I've had to work (yuk, work) with Illustrator Freehand and Quark, and don't really care for Freehand or Illustrator for web design. Typically, if I want start a design with vector graphics (for smooth curves), I'll do it in Flash then move it over to photoshop for the finishing touches.

Now, if I'm doing print design, that's a different story.

I have used mainly Adobe software for the better part of 10 years. It was what I got started with and most familar with. The last few years I've been trying out new programs, but always go back to Photoshop. I did find Photo Impact to be a cool program for certain effects, but that is about all I use it for. I use Photoshop and a Casmate program together when doing vector art for the vinyl shop.

Photoshop 7 is awesome. Although it may not be the most affordable alternative it sure is useful for anything. The only thing is doesnt do is clean my house for me.
