I use Blibs to convert my video files into .gif files for use on forums all the time. Check if they support the video formats you want first.

Try to use gifninja its best tool to create animated gif..

Try VirtualDub. It's free, and very fast.

I have always used Photoshop but VirtualDub looks interesting! Looks like it holds a pretty good/funny story behind it!

You cannot use Adobe photoshop to convert a video to gif, may be you can use Adobe flash or after effects.

I use the Animation palette in Photoshop CS5 to create GIF files. Screenshot the frames by pressing pause and play on a HQ video

Open the Animation palette (Window > Animation).

Can be a tad arduous but is just as effective!
