I just noticed that Safari shows images slightly darker then they really are.

Safari recognizes the ICC profile and has color management.

I was really wondering why that is.

With most images this doesn't matter much. But one image, where the face was in a slight shade, it ruined it.

I compared the original JPEG and the same JPEG/also same size, and seen through Safari it is darker than seen through Adobe Bridge.

My System is color managed, my screen calibrated, the image is in sRGB, has an ICC profile.

It has to be the browser.

Maybe the browser has something to do with it. But as far as I have experienced, it should be the monitor or the video card that needs to get fixed. I am using FF 3.0.10 and the colors here are all well.

And no matter what YOU see, probably 99% of the people looking at images on any web site will NOT have those advantages and will see something differently than you do.

Yes, there is some differences with the browsers.

Exactly what I was going to say, and unless you are designing something just for yourself to marvel at then you need find a way to make it look decent for the masses.

Yes, I guess the web technology isn't perfect yet.

I just stopped over at a friend's house who looked at my website.

It was awful. He had this age old monitor that still had a 600x480 or so resolutions. My website is 1024x768. You can imagine how that looked.

And with colors, there are differences anyway.

Printing on paper, that's where the fun begins.

Sometimes one can get a bit too color management minded...

Some times it changes depends on the browser.
I prefer using firefox never used safari so its kinda hard to say the picture difference. try comparing the pics. As Archie said you cant get the best quality of a picture nor a video when you view its Online.

When you checked in Safari, was it Safari on a PC or on a Mac.

Because a Mac (sorry but I refuse to use the definate article)
has different Gamma settings
http://www.cgsd.com/papers/gamma.web.html

Even within Windows, IE6 on XP is going to look lousy
compared to IE8 on Vista.

I've found Chrome is by far the best of the browsers for image quality.

And then of course there is your monitor resolution.

So my advice is figure out what minimum specs will
cover the majority of your user base and design for that.

You'll go crazy trying to cover every possibility.
