I've been told many many times by my teachers that you MUST use a vector based program for LOGO DESIGN.

I do all print design but I don't get a lot of Logo design jobs. Once in awhile I'll get one and so far it always comes down to having to use a vector art style - the customer usually wants something that can be transferred to different types of material without loosing it's resolution.

Photoshop is not vector based graphics and unless it's for the web you will have to deal with a degraded resolution. Most companies who want a new logo design need it to be able to print on anything without loosing the resolution. Illustrator and Corell are vector programs. Bottom line, Adobe makes the best programs but.... they are very expensive....

If you are a student at any college, there are websites with huge discounts. In california we have a statewide college site that's for students & faculty only. (you have to type in your student ID# to purchase anything)

I bought the CS4 DESIGN PREMIUM (there are other versions like STANDARD but this one is the best) for $350 including tax! Regular price is around $2000!
The Suite has Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Reader Pro, and Version Cue!

Photoshop was designed for modifying and changing photos... while Illustrator was designed purely for creating signs, logos and images for websites...

VECTORS own RASTER .... Learn Illustrator first... I did... and I am SO glad I did.

I would reccommend that you get Adobe Photoshop although it is quite expensive and can be very hard to use at first. Try using some easier programs and free ones at first like GIMP and then start using Photoshop. Don't just make graphics and logos though, try editing photos and using Photoshop to it's full potential. That's when you start to become a pro at using it and your graphics and logos automatically become way better.

Photoshop, GIMP, and Corel Draw are the best in line for creating logo. If you concentrate on learning them by tutorial you will get the hang of it. I too before was having a hard time learning photoshop but when I read books and tutorials or watch video tutorial on photoshops it's getting easier by the minute when I absorb it.

I agree, Illustrator is the one to use for logo design. you need to make logo's in vector format. The new Illustrator in CS4 is phenomenal.

quick question Hylith, what did you mean by VECTORS own Raster?

good question - I would try looking in your local library for a book on the program. Be sure to get the right book version for the Photoshop you have. Personally, I didn't like the Adobe books but they do have lessons on a cd in them - you can copy the lessons to your hard drive from the cd and then do each lesson.
If all else fails try posting an ad in your local Craigslist for a tutor. Or take a class at a nearby Jr. College....
