Neds is right, Vector is another format which you will want to learn. A good designer is versatile and able to give their clients a wide range of products and services. Illustrator & Flash are other programs you might take interest in after you've become familiar with Photoshop. I use Adobe products but their are others available depending on your needs.

Be creative & unique.

Never steal another designers work (reputation is very important)

Learn how to take critique and use it to your advantage. In the learning stages this is a huge part of it all. Designers can not wear their feelings on their sleeves. It's an industry full of great talent and people fighting for the prize.

Once you feel comfortable with your work, join competitions like the ones in this forum. Learn from other people's work, how they take direction & how they display their work. Presentation can make a huge difference. Along the way build a portfolio to showcase your work and have it available somewhere on the web so that future potential clients have something to look at.

Designing programs are complex and offer many different features. Become familiar with them and know how they can work for you. There are tons of tutorials out there to help you get to where you need to be. (if you need help finding any, just ask)

Build good relationships with other designers and network with people but remember that you can't trust everyone.

Once you begin submitting work to either contests or potential clients, watermark your work. I learned this the hard way because I am a very trusting person but this is a business, you have to think that way. I got burned by a priest. Yes, you read correctly. Not even just someone claiming to be a man of God, someone with a site, credentials and a referral. So no, you can't trust anyone you don't know. Once you begin working and building business relationships you will better be able to gauge who you can and can't trust. Our contest forum allows us to see information about the contest holders to help us know who is good and who may not be. (iTrader rating)

There is much more you will need to know, this is just a drop in the bucket but enough to help on the road to getting started.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm me.

Good luck and remember the number one thing is to have FUN!

The most important thing for each and every aspiring graphic artist is to learn The New Method in Abstract Art.

GX3 Grafix made a number of good points.

As a graphic designer you really gotta make sure you can create a wide range of styles. The wider your range the wider your potential client base.

Skill in creating graphics is obviously important but even more important then that is communicating with your clients. Keep them updated and ask questions.

Also very important: Don't accept a job you know you can't do. It ruins your reputation and frankly it's not in the best interest of the client.

To practice your skills enter in design contests like the ones on this forum and other places around the Net. This will perfect your skills.

And lastly. Learn learn learn. You will always keep learning new things so don't stop doing it.

I like to focus on one thing. The KISS rule, that is:

Keep
It
Simple
Stupid

I'm sure you can get caught up on all the designs you can create with adobe products, their wide range of brushes, patterns, styles, and flash, however simplicity is always more pleasing! Sometimes it doesn't apply, however on most cases it does , I find that its the best way of creating something truly appealing. Really, thats all you need, along with a good eye, and of course, commitment. Keep at it, and you'll be the best. Practice, practice, and practice. You won't be the best when you first start off, however maybe with a bit of commitment, you'll be giving us all tips in the future to come!
