Here's a scenario that happened last week:

I received a pair of JPGs that I needed to do some work on (unfortunately, I can't attach them because they're part of a site that's not done yet).

I opened them up in Photoshop 7.0 to do some minor work on them. I was able to open them up, but could not save them as JPGs, PSDs, or any other file type due to a "program error." Even if I opened the files up and then tried to save them as something else immediately after, no luck.

I uninstalled/reinstalled Photoshop, to no avail.

Every other JPG I had on my hard drive opened/saved fine. So it was just these two JPGs.

Now...here's the real weird part. I tried opening the JPGs in IE, since I do know that IE will present a broken image graphic in place of a corrupted JPG. To my surprise, they opened. So I saved them as bitmaps.

I opened the bitmaps in Photoshop and was able to save those and work with them.

So...my question is this:

What could cause a JPG to open in both IE in Photoshop, be "saveable" as a BMP in IE, but "unsaveable" in PS?

I could be wrong, but your jpgs are probably 16-bit images.
Go into Image > Mode and convert them to 8-bit . Then, you
should be able to save them.

I've run across that 'program error' message before, such wonderfully informative error messages Adobe gives us. I'm with Lance, I'd bet its the image mode.

Nope. 8-bit image mode. Not a bad thought, but unfortunately not it.

It could be because your computer does not have permissions to edit the images (as it could be considered an external source). Do they have "read-only" properties?

It's not exactly the same situation, but I think it might have the same solution. Those images just probably had some property that Photoshop didn't like with the configuration that you had.

Hmmm...that solution would have to work in reverse, since I'm a PC user and since I'm also the administrator.

James: no read-only was set on the file. I'm also the admin.

Good thoughts...just not the answer yet.

not sure about the photoshop bit of the question but I know the answer to the IE not saving in the right format ...

"This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true: •This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full.•This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https)."

taken from ... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260650

now there a idea ... hows your scratch disk for space?

Well, I found a KB article on the subject - not sure if it's dead on but...

Have you installed the PS 7.01 update ?

Hello -

I remember that error when I hung with Photoshop (for a number of years), but haven't had it since I upgraded to CS2. I agree with the Lady, and here is a link to the download for 7.01, which may solve your problem (it was given as a link on a board where someone had a similar problem):
