Hello All -

Hey... I have been learning, and writing (see article on SVG - the Era of Scalable Vector Graphics) about SVGs. I think they are the next big thing in graphics. Most people know that they hold resolution at any size (like Illustrator eps files), but did you know they are programmable (like Flash), but free and easier to learn?

So take the poll, and let me us know what you think. Do you use them? Are you using a free open-source editor like InkScape to make them?

Yours,
Scott

Hello -

Anyone even tried using SVGs in their work? How about using "InkScape", the free, open source SVG editor (it's similar to Illustrator) -- have you tried it?

SVG is great, but in the current state of the field, it's almost of no uses.
I have used it at work, to generate charts from datas.

I works great, but the browsers supporting it natively is too low for now.
And the weight of a SVG file is big, compared to it's png/gif/jpg equivalent (for usual size images, of course. I'm not talking about high-def images).

And most importantly, peoples used to bitmap editing won't get a grip too fast on vectorial editing, and I think that most of the time, the SVG file will b used as a source, but exported to an bitmap format. Like a PSD file is exported to a jpg or gif.

So no, I don't think that SVG will take any uprise compared to traditional formats.

I haven't used it, and I'm not about to until I see the answer to one question (that I doubt will be answered anytime soon): watermarks. What happens if you're someone like Forrest Croce or an e-commerce store with exclusive images/products? Since an SVG is vector art, the flaw I see is that it would be easy to remove the watermark.

Hi Adam -

Good point. I did a quick Google search for the answer and seems like some folks are working on a olution: A Java Tool for SVG Watermarking

Your question about photography like Forrest does, should still rely on presentation (and sales for that matter) in JPEG format -- no? Then SVG would simply be used for incidental website art, in the example you gave, and folks like Forrest would continue to watermark their JPEG photos.

Vector graphics, from what I've heard, are very interesting. I think it'll become very big in the future.
