The idea of a payment (or portion of a payment) up front is a good one when you first think about it. But it reality, it isnt that great. When you think about paypal transfer fees (and other payment service fees) and the amount of work that goes into managing the money, it is pretty complicated. A straight contest fee would be easier, but like others have said, this will scare away a lot of contest holders.
Anyway, I am glad people are thinking and discussing things! I really like some of the ideas we are coming up with and think they will help out the forum!

lol, just for fun I am going to update that list:

- contest entries must be watermarked by the owner

- contest entries need to have a webmaster watermark somewhere

- payment must be recieved first

- contest holder and winner must extchange talkupation (after payment and extchange)

- non watermarked entries will be removed

that shouldn't be to hard to follow...

now how could we incorperate such a list into the forums so people see it before makeing or replying to contests?

A minimum post count and a "listing guide" or "template" (ie. Website name, colors, size, etc.) were also suggested.

oh.. I have another idea

not sure how easy it would be to implement, but what if the mods could verify contests

umm... it's pretty clear that a contest is fake when it is worth $20,000 for a header...

for example, if a mod has seen a contest and decided it is real, they can change the icon beside the thread...

would mean that it has been verified...

or, if that would be to farfetched, they could just post in the thread ~contest varified~

if this idea has any chance, then I suppose

- moderaters reserve the right to verify or close contests

should be added to the list

any thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea to me. There definitely needs to be some more moderators around this forum though.

Is there a way to view individual talkupation comments? I couldn't figure out how to view any specifics in talkupation. If this isnt possible, maybe it is something else that could be added.

There is more than one way to improve contests. I agree with these suggestions.

All posts in a contest can only be for legitimate entries. I just talked with Tim and spoke of how Writer was posting in contests asking people to close the contest and do work with him. Not only is that unethical, but that is something that shouldn't be allowed. I think we also should figure out specifically what sort of rules need to apply to the contest that don't necessarily apply to protecting the logos. I think that could have a domino effect and really help things move smoother.

Just one man's opinion though.

Hmmm, I noticed that too. Well, I noticed that he offered his services in a contest thread. I thought this was against the rules, but I just looked at them again, and didn't see it anywhere. I definitely think this should become a rule. It is not fair for someone to participate in a contest only to find out that the contest holder decided to hire someone exclusively. That defeats the purpose of a contest. I dont mean anything negative towards writer, but I agree that it seems unethical to advertise services in a contest.

There isn't much point in doing that because most of the people who enter in comps always enter in new ones. But i think it's not right to ask publicly so you CAN invite people to your comp by pm but dont brign up old threads doing it lol

Pay first is a good idea. It'll reduce fake contests.

New rules have been posted. The main change is a 20 minimum post count requirement. This is only temporary. Later we will start a combination of minimum post counts or a listing fee.

For example those with over 100 posts could post design contests for free. Otherwise, they could pay a small listing fee and no minimum post count would be required...

I am also about to add two new moderators to exclusively moderate this forum.

This should be a good start.

Hi everyone. I am happy to let you guys know that I have now become a moderator for the graphic design contest forum. I am really glad that all of you have provided some feedback on how we can improve the contest section of webmaster-talk.com. I will be providing positive talkupation to everyone who has replied in this thread. If you have more ideas, please dont hesitate to post them. We can use all the ideas we can get! I have a couple more ideas. What about asking the contest holder to provide a closing date and to let us know if and what other sites the contest will be posted on. I know we cant force people to be honest, but it would be nice to know these two things going into a contest. What do you guys think?

I also really like the idea of the post count / listing fee option brought up by Tim. I think that will be very effective.
