How exactly do you get hold of these vouchers, from the hosting/domain company's point of view? Obviously it's to attract new customers - hence the new customer only rule, and obviously enough to get people to spend money - i.e. the 14 day rule.

But still, it's free advertising!

That's a good question. I'm sure Google could answer that better, but it's probably some sort of promotional program they have with certain types of merchants.....

This is pure speculation, but maybe merchants that are spending a level of money themselves with Adwords are approached by Google. They might see hosting company xyz is spending 10K a year in advertising... Well, let's help them make more money so they keep spending more money by giving them a voucher to give away... company xyz makes more money in sign ups and expands their Adwords account to spend more money themselves!

Google's only stands to gain by getting more customers and increased revenues.

Mlevenhagen, that's a good suggestion - just out of curiosity I think I'll ask, and post back here.

Does Google pay a referal fee, they do for adsense publishers, if a company refers you and you buy google ads they get a fee, that may cover the cost of the voucher they give you

The free vouchers are great incentives to sign up and great free 'pr' for google

It'd be nice if they also offer something for existing long-time customers.

Of course you do realise that AdWord vouchers can only be used on a NEW AdWords account, You can only use a voucher offer ONCE so if you are hoping to use several you are out of luck, and as they are non-tranferrable if you bought them from anywhere, such as ebay or a member of a forum you are also out of pocket.

If you see someone offering to sell them for a fraction of their value, it's a SCAM!!

I recently took out a hosting plan at hosting.click4hosting.com and received $25 in Google Adwords credits and $50 in Microsoft AdCenter credits. I think it was for new advertisers but if you already have an account you may get away with opening a new Adwords account

C'mon guys $25, $50, or even $100 in vouchers costs Google nothing, there is no need to compare what you pay for what you get. Google's overhead is the same whether or not the vouchers are used. (Not to mention more competition in the keyword/phrases you bid on)

However, once the value of the voucher has been used up - guess what? You are a new Google Adwords customer, that will probably tweak and mess with your Adwords program because you can't live with the drop in traffic. Ka-ching for Google.

The incremental cost for Google in customer aquisition is nothing - Brilliant!
