Is it possible to have the words "Ads by Google" removed? if so, How?

Possible, yes.
Allowed, no.

if you become a preferred publisher - then yes, its allowed

You can unsubscribe from "On-site Advertise signup". By unchecking the box, the pharse "Ads by Gooooogle" will then be removed.

Do you mean you can only do this at the time you sign up for adsense?

No, that will only remove the 'Advertise on this site' but NOT 'Ads by Google'.

How do you people compare the "ads by google" graphics and text? I just get the feeling that text would have been helpful to make the ads to merge well with the site content. I feel the graphics would standout, and affect the CTR. Anyone has an opinion?

I prefered the text, however I think Google changed it to a graphic to prevent some people trying to 'mask' the text with colours

A preferred publisher is someone who has a certain number of page views per day, I think the threshold is 20,000 - beyond my reach at the moment
Google will let you know if qualify
