I'm getting around $5 a click for my adsense but the cost for ads on my website is about $50 a click. Is google known for taking that much for themselves?

How do you know it's $50 a click?

I used Google's keyword tool to figure out the cost of the keywords appearing on my website. Many of them are around $50/click.

Many, but not necessarily all. My guess is you're getting that $50 from the highest CPC on a given set of keywords, but people may not be clicking on the most expensive ad on your page.

Also the bid on a keyword isn't going to be the same as the actual money someone pays for the ad. There are other factors involved in determining what the advertiser actually pays.

If the second highest bid is $10 for example the actual cost of the ad is going to be less than $50 even if that was the bid. The bids can give you a good idea of the relative CPC of ads across keywords, but they won't necessarily be the actual price someone pays.

Yeah I'd be pretty happy with $5 per click too.

Don't be fooled by what Google's keyword tool tells you. Those are the bid prices for ads to be shown on Google's own sites (i.e. on the search results page). Advertisers can pay much less to show ads on the content network (AdSense sites) and usually that's what they do -- either they don't show them at all, or they enable separate bidding for those ads.

Plus there are the other reasons that were mentioned, such as the bidding prices and Google's "smart pricing".

Seriously though guys we have to try to find out how much google adsense takes of the cut. I mean we could be getting screwed with everyone rushing to adwords because of adsense we could be getting the short end of a stick. But not many people out here what to bite the hand that feeds.

Thank You

Well only Google knows and they aren't telling. I also think the cut may be a little different based on how much money you direct their way. If you can drive a lot of clicks you probably get a little more of the cut of each. Just a hunch on my part though.

Along with that GEO targeting may also be a factor. The click may be from a country which does not have that much bid.

That's true too. I had forgotten about geo targeting. One of the tacitics I've seen mentioned to increase CTR from AdSense is to check IPs and only serve ads to certain areas.

Google changes their prices and they do not reveal anything so don't count on these keyword tools

I'd like to get $5 per click...then I'd be happy with just 1 click per day. I make about that much with 40 clicks per day. No, it's not a myspace site. Guess I need to look into higher paying keyword sites.
