Google say images perform better.
From what i remember google said while image ads don't automatically pay more (though in theory they should because there is only one advert in the ad block) they are more likely to be clicked. That is from a publishers point of view. From an advertisors point of view images allow you to convey a lot more info to people, A picture says a thousand words as they say. You can include your logo and some bullet points which will help with your marketing and promotion even if the advert has never been click.
An example of this is the "seo book" adverts that appear on webmaster related sites and blogs, I have never clicked one of those adverts, But it's in my head. I know the logo and i know what the site does. A text ad hasn't had the same effect on me.
