Newbie, some basic questions and advise.

hey Guys,
We are new to using Adsense and have a number of basic questions, your advise would be appreciated.
1) How does Adsense select ads? We have a page on our site http://www.lunchtime.com.au/?page=sh...mbinitrustcafe
This is a listing for a food outlet in Sydney, but adsense ads come up with jigsaw/puzzle ads. We are very confussed.
2) If you have a page with X content, but know customers looking at X would also be interested in Y ads, is it possible to get these ads displayed? How?
3) How often are pages reviewed and new ads selected?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Mark

Depending on the content of the page.

You need to put either Y as a content or else rely on Google to know that X and Y are related and advertisers may even be interested in Y if he is interested in X.

Almost all page load I have seen ads rotating and even on some pages same ads appear for even more than a week. It all depends on how the advertisers are willing to compete for similar looking terms.

I found that I had to slightly alter the page titles as well. Some of the ads coming up were completely unrelated until I did this.

maybe jigsaw/puzzle advertisers are bidding on the same keywords as other food outlet advertisers ....eatable jigsaw/puzzle (if you dont like them, you can eat them )
Use Competitive Ad Filter to block it...

I just peeked at your site and it looks like this has corrected itself. All the ads were food related.
I pretty much agree with what others have posted. The content and repition of words on the page does determine which ads you are served.

Mark if you just started using AdSense it probably just took a little time for Google to get a better sense of the site. It seems like the first week or so the ads aren't so relevant, but they become a little more relevant over time.
Sometimes it's just how the content is interpreted and what ads exist for your content. I use AdSense on my blog which is about web design/development and seo for the most part, but if I mention a site selling digital cameras as a running example through one of my posts it's possible Google will see that page as more relevant to digital cameras than seo say. For the most part they seem to do a good job though of presenting ads relevant to my pages and site as a whole.
For the most part if you keep the pages on topic Google will get it right, but if you want to give them a little help by telling them what to look at and what to ignore in your content you can try using section targeting. Section targeting is simply inserting a comment into parts of your code that lets Google know which part of the page you do want to be considered for the ads and which parts they can ignore.

The otherday i discovered this in the adsense code for tutorialized.com

google_hints = "Photoshop";

I've never seen this before and don't know if it works but have never seen tutorialzed with unrelated ads, so i'm guessing this is how it is done.

Slightly off-topic, But i sometimes use adsense to see how google see my page.
If after a couple of weeks you are still getting irrelivant adverts it's a good sign that you need to work on your keywords and other on-page SEO.

Sam I think you need to be a premium advertiser before you can use that tag. If you don't have permission from Google they could drop you from the program for using it. As far as I know you need an invite from Google before being allowed to use it.
That's a pretty good idea stOx. I had never thought of it, but it makes perfect sense.

Invite from google? Whats that? How do you get one?
Why wouldn't they want you to use it if you are not a premium advertiser?
Premium advertiser?

You don't have to be a premium advertiser to get Google Hints which allows you to nudge Adsense towards a certain set of keywords. But I assume you do have to be doing good volume and by that I mean at the very least UPS club and have a site that needs the Google Hints and not just because you want to try to get a better paying CPC set.

This is a reply of a thread i found.
I probably wouldn't risk using the code knowing google.

The Google hints are kind of new to me. Actually I wasn't aware of them until you pointed it out above. I did search and read through a few forum threads and most seemed to say you needed to be a premium advertiser to use them.
As far as getting the invite I don't think it's anything you can do. I think Google will send out an invite if you're bringing in enough money through AdSense. The invite is going to be at their discretion so all you can do is try to improve AdSense revenue and wait on Google.

I found quite a few that said that you don't. I don't know why they would want to restrict this. It would really be handy for the milllions of people who do have the problem of irrelevent ads on their site.
Sorry about going a bit off the subject, but i will start a new thread about this.

It's possible you don't need to be a premium member. Like I said it's a new tag to me. The reason though they may not want you to use it though is because it can take away from the whole concept of contextual ads.
For example if I have a page on my site about seo, but think the clicks don't pay enough I could use that tag to have Google show me an ad about real estate or something I know lawyers might be bidding on. The ads then have nothing to do with my actual page or site in that case.
I think that's why Google would be reserving tags like that only for premium advertisers who they already have a relationship with and have more trust in them.
You can always email the AdSense team to find out for certain. It might be better to know with certaintly than to take the risk of being banned from the program.
