for those of you that use google adsense, have you found that a certain location on your webpage does better than other spots? for me, one of my sites is basically 2 columns (with the leftside shorter and contain links) does the best. i had it at the top of the page and it looked tacky and screamed "ADS" whereas the ads on the side of the page blends in with the site.

how about you?

It all depends on layout of certain page. In general, the adsense block should be placed in or near the area which is most covered with user's mouse moves.

The best part to put the ads if you are looking for higher click through is almost 200 pixel from top. Almost where view first unread options comes in this thread. This has been proposed by many in many marketing forums and I am also seeing higher click through in my site. you would see many Giants like ebay and amazon put there best section to promote on this portion

Thanks

As far as CTR goes, it's generally a good idea to place them near the top of the page (above the fold). Integretion is the real trick though. You need to play around with the colors, borders, etc. to make the ads blend in with the rest of the site.

When making money from Adsense, ad positioning does count alot. The better you place the ads the more money you are likely to make.

i like adjusting the settings so that it looks like blue links in a vertical list on a white background and i imitate the look exactly on the sites navigation system then whack the ads in the middle of the navigation menu. Doesnt break googles TOS because i am not directing people to click on it, its just looks like my menu.

Yeah I noticed that too.

I tried to put AdSense at the bottom of my page, where hopefully no-one would notice them, and it gave me absolutely nothing for any impressions, compared to like 100USD/thou before...

Safe to say, have moved it back to the top now...

Adsense doesn't pay for impressions, only clicks.
So if no one notices them, no one will click on them.

I think impressions plays a factor in the amount you earn. Sometimes i have had no clicks and 1 cent earnings... But it's never been more than 1 cent, so don't go buying a speedboat hoping to make money from impressions.

Ultimately it's the clicks that you get paid for.

Not a lot of money from impressions here either StOx. Now if we were both getting thousands upond thousands of page views those pennies might start to add up.

I think Guerilla's way for settng up ads is probably the best way to go. You should definitely experiment some with the ad types, ad colors, ad placements and measure the results to see what works best. It's not always the same for every site, but I think the general guidleines of having the ads blend with your site and following the Google Heatmap work well.

Dont always trust google... or somebody else, sometimes beside reading other people's writing you should always do a research yourself you know.

It is all about how you designed your page, but you should place them in an area where people have to see them.
I have good experience with a skyscraper to the right of the page, and links right over my own navigation menu to the left.

Heatmap works well for most of the sites. However its not a one size for all situation. There could be a lot of differnece depending on the nature of site. For example, for forums, I have seen ads below the first post works very well.

Just a few points, based on my experience:

1. Dont use the typical places for ads. People are ad blind now a days, and they avoid looking at the typical areas(like top banner) naturally.

2. Mix ads with the content. In beween the content, without borders works very well.

3. use same color scheme as the rest of your site. the one that gells with the site content performs well.

4. Dont over use the ads. The first block should be the one where you expect maximum clicks. Normally, just one block in best performaing area will work best.
