Oh man, if I had a dollar for everytime I heard this story..
Google DOES have a responsibility to their advertisers. Imagine you were spending your company's money to increase your brand awareness and generate sales. You have an AdWords account and while it's costing the company some money, it has an amazing advantage that few other advertising and marketing tools do - complete and transparent metrics to gauge your ROI. You spend X amount of money, and you recieve 2X or 3X or 10X back. What other advertising tool lets you do that??
So if one day you open your AdWords account and you see that your ROI is not 10X but instead -1000X. Your 100$ a week advertising campaign just cost your company 100,000$. Your boss is going to get pissed. And who is your boss going to yell at? That's right. You. And who're you going to yell at? That's right. Google. And who is Google going to yell at? That's right. The publisher.
So, in an effort to keep their advertisers happy (or to keep them at all), Google has to crack down on the publishers. Ok, yes, that means losing a little revenue in the short run. But advertisers are WAY more important to a big, impersonal monster like Google. And while you think it's not your fault and this should matter to Google, it doesn't. Google doesn't care whose fault this is. All they care about is that you've become a provider of Clickfraud. Doesn't matter if you're the victim or the original perveyor. Google is the target and therefore, they need to get rid of you to get rid of the threat.
The thing is, Google is a great adserver. It's fairly uncomplicated (compared with some others) and it's a recognized brand that everyone works with, in some capacity. The thing is, Google is so omnipresent and successful that they can afford to be impersonal. They don't care about your problems. They can sign on a new you in seconds.
I like to think of Google has the hot girl from Harvard.
See, Harvard girls are not hot. Sure, they make good wives. They'll earn well, they know how to do their taxes, they don't waste money on jewelry and clothes, and they probably have no STDs. But when it comes to the bedroom...*YAWN*
So along comes Google. Now, Google does pretty well at Harvard. Gets good grades, dresses well, all the teachers like her. Is she really the best student? No. Is she going to be the class validictorian and be voted "Most Likely to Rule the Earth"? Of course. Why? Because she's hot. All the Harvard men want to be with her. All the Harvard girls want to be like her. And slowly, but surely, she starts to dominate the campass. And like all dominatrices, she can cast away/invite anybody she pleases. She dumps you? Too bad. What can you do? She's Google, and she's a *****.
