Hello, I am Big John, I am totally new at this, and I have decided to try and build a website, and then try to earn a few bucks with it. I have a few questions, first does my website have to be all about one topic? I know a decent amount about food, mustangs, computers, tractors, video games, and a few other subjects, but I am no total expert on anyone of these. I looked up Chinese cooking, and saw a sight with 40000 recipes, I am a decent cheff, but I do not know a tenth of that, would I still be able to get traffic if I built a small site about it? Would it be ok with adsense if I built several sections in my sight, each touching on a subject? I would really appreciate any advice you have to give, thank you.

You're better off keeping your site focused on one topic, though if you have related topics there's no reason they can't be together on one site. For example you could put Mustangs (I assume you mean Ford Mustangs) and Tractors on a site about vehicles. You could of course also have the tractors on a site about farming. But computers probably wouldn't belong on either site.

I'm generalizing, but more content is typically going to be better for search engines. More content is more opportunities to pull in traffic for different keywords. That doesn't mean you can't rank well if your site is small, but a site that continues to grow and add new content is more likely to get more search traffic. Also more content likely makes the site more useful to real people, who will then tell their friends, link to your content, post your content to social sites, etc.

Understand too that search traffic doesn't come overnight. Depending on your topic it could take time before you get any search traffic. Focus on real people. Make your site a valuable resource to real people first. It will help set the foundation for all your marketing and search engine optimization.

I have to both agree and disagree with Steve.

Keeping the site focused on the topic you know most about, is a good thing from a marketing / promotion POV, simply because it is easier to get the initial link building started if the site is on a single topic.
However there is no reason that it can't be on a diverse range of topics and still be successful.

Other than that, I agree 100% with him. Build the pages as you would if you were creating it for yourself to read.

Thank you for all of the advice, my biggest worry is whether the adds would get messed up if my site has too many topics. In my sections about the ford mustangs, would adds for video games show up if I had section for video games on the same site, but not the same page. If I add all that I know about these topics I can make a decent sized site, and then I plan to add more as I learn it, and keep the site growing with daily updates. Please tell me if I am barking up the wrong tree.

Chris I agree that a site can be successful with varying topics, but I'd suggest it's going to make it harder. If you pages about auto repair and also pages about low-sodium recipes I think it's going to make people wonder if you really know about either.

That doesn't mean it can't work, but I think you'd have to do something else much better than you might otherwise. Maybe the writing on the site would need to be that much better.

I'd also think the sites that can pull of the different topics are those that grow rather large like About.com. I think most sites would do better to keep the site focused. If the topics vary they should at least be related.

But I do agree you can still be successful with a diverse set of topics.

bigjohn1984, here is my advice. Everything is about realizing your mania. Find what you love most, make a site about it and develop it everyday. Know that- the water digs the stone not with a power but with a constancy.

Yes, the passion is what should be there first. The rest is just hard work and learning SEO to get noticed. Good luck and try to focus on one topic that you love.

Jack of All Trade, Master of None !
Many of us probably know about quite alot about thousand and one things about a thousand and one things. Its better you find something you are strongest at this point and work on it. After this site(niche) become fairly successful (you will need a way to measure it...in your opinion, when is considered fairly successful though...eg you are earning X amount of dollars on from this site alone).
When you are fairly successful, then you can consider starting a second strongest niche. If you try doing so many things at the same time, you will not be able give them due attention.

bigjohn,
Even within a page you can let google know that you only want part of the content emphasized to determine the topic of ads -
https://www.google.com/adsense/suppo...n&answer=23168
- I have used it a few times, and it works very well.
For example, I've needed to keep "cabinet" ads out of a site on the topic of under-cabinet TVs.
And it was very useful for getting the "eye doctor" and "optician" ads off of my Birding Binoculars site. ( When you write about binoculars, you have to talk about "optics" and "eye relief").
You can use it twice on one page to set apart different sections.
