Not yet, but it's poised to.

When you're on top there's no where else to go but down.

Of all of those mentioned, YPN had the best chance to really contend for teh contextual crown. But when they displayed what seemed like pure disdain for publishers and dragged their "beta" out for years while banning publishers left and right without a clear and concise plan of attack they pretty much squandered that opportunity.

None of the others have the the technological resources nor the financial backing to truly affect Google's market share in a big way.

But I say they are poised to because the market is just waiting for someone to come in and do exactly what Google does, even if they don't do it better, and pay more than Google.

There is irrefutable proof of that if you look back at YPNs launch. Their network was shaky, their user interface was horrible, their stats were delayed, but there was still a MASSIVE wave of webmasters switching to them because they paid better and they stayed with them as long as that continued to remain true.

Yeah, I am not sure Adsense is loosing ground. A lot of the "failures" of these competitors may further reinforce Adsense. In terms of payouts, I saw income drops 1-2 years ago, but it has held rather steady since then. I do agree with what George said about the only place to go is down, but at the same time they can still remain up top for some time to come.

I don't know whether Adsense is losing ground or not but I have read a number of blogs lately who have dropped adsense for other alternative ads because the income potential was better. All in all though I think it depends on your sites audience. What works for one site isn't necessarily going to yield the same results on a different site.

I don't think so, but it depends on how you look at it.

Are they loosing ground in terms of payout, in terms of relevancy, in terms of having other networks to use instead of them? But in all these cases I would say they are still holding their ground pretty well, at least from my experience.

I don't think so. Each month i continue to do well with adsense earnings. I've been able to add other advertising (image) networks in addition to Kontera and my adsense earnings hasn't missed a beat.

There are certainly ways to more efficiently monetize most sites, in terms of affiliate offers, CPA/CPM networks (depending on site), etc.

However, AdSense is by far the easiest to implement, with the least amount of work. As long as that is true, then AdSense will always have a large market share from the people who are just getting into earning money online, because it's the easiest place to start.

Even though you can make more money with other networks a lot of times, the other network often make things more complicated than they need to be I think.

Exactly. Who can compete with them? YPN was good, but their payouts turned to crap.

I would agree in saying that they are not loosing ground yet. Some of the people that are turning to other networks are the ones that have been banned from Adsense and then many others are using some of these alternative networks with adsense on the same pages.

I think adsense will be at the top for a while still. No other network really seems to be coming close to them right now.

yeah i think that this will be round for a while to come. I see that banner ads come back tour.....and cpa is getting big if you are into trend marketing and entertain people.

but if you get decent traffic then adsense does a great job.

Not yet and I don't think that it will loose its ground in the near future. Adsense works great and it generates large amount of bucks for people who are associated with it. It still has a bright future I must say.

i think the reason many bloggers are dropping adsense is because if you can get DIRECT advertisers it is a much bigger and more proffitable method then just getting paid per click as direct pay monthly or CPM which means more $$$$ for you!

I've noticed a trend of web publishers and bloggers shifting away from Adsense. The more successful sites/blogs seem to be moving towards the sponsorship model with direct ad sales. Smaller publishers who have been removing adsense are doing so because of poor earnings and because running adsense "is not worth it" for them.

Even a few blogs I've come across have removed Adsense for no other reason than the idea that it cheapens the perceived value of their site. Some advertisers will not place their branding ads on sites containing Adsense.

I believe Adsense will remain "king" for a while, but in the long run I think that will give way to Adsense being "king" of the lower end of the net. Generally meaning the sites/blogs which have lower value to advertisers.

Personally, I still use Adsense quite successfully and expect to be doing so for quite some time into the future.

I think over time you will see publishers banding together (even competitors) to use there large traffic numbers to leverage the bigger players and main advertisers... I still think for getting in as a newbie adsense is the way to go but over time once you start getting bigger, you really have to look into other options.

Google changed their traffic requirements recently, so newbie sites (that didn't have a prior relationship with Google) keep getting a default ad about hurricane relief until let out of the sandbox. In some cases that's months. In the meantime, the sites make nothing from Adsense. Sites owners are finding other alternatives that give them a chance at actually monetizing their sites. I know that Google is trying to reduce click fraud, but is this really the best thing they could come up with? So yes, with newbie sites, adsense is definitely losing ground.
