The current TOS prohibits images next to ads if a user would be able to think that the 2 were related. If your image is the same height and width and directly next to the images, it's almost certainly against the rules. If it matches just 1 of the dimensions, then there better be something that make it obvious that they're not related. If they're completely different dimensions, and offset from each other, then you're more likely safe. Having something big and shiny in the same part of your page just to get the users attention somewhere in the vicinity of the ads isn't the real big deal. It's the user potentially confusing the ads and images as being related that will get you in trouble. Remember, google gets to decide what is and isn't confusing, not you, so be cautious...
