Hi,
newbie here (actually signed up some time last year, but started actively using the site only last week), asking you for sharing opinions and experiences.

What is your take on how many bids it will take to get your first assignment? How many did you place?

And what about pricing?
I have seen people doing 20-page magazines for 50 Dollars (actually one of the employers felt ,insulted' by my - in my opinion - more realistic offer) and business card for 10 or 15 bucks.
I am starting to wonder if it is even possible to get any work through this site with prices that allow me to make a living . . .

It's hard to say how many bids it will take.

One thing for sure it will take work. Keep on biding for jobs. Everyday no exception and eventually you will start getting your assignments. People tend to give up too fast. For some it might take 10 bids for others 100. One of my coaches used to say the more 'no's' you get the closer the 'yes'.
Always put 110% everyday.

Once you start getting jobs, you will have portfolio and it will be easier to get work.

As for the prices don't worry. Charge the amount you think you are worth. You will find people eventually who would buy your skills, keep on looking.
