When a logo design contest holder asks for these formats, do they want us to provide our designs in ALL 4 of those formats or just one of those particular formats???? Thanks.

it depends on whether they state 'and' or 'or'. if you have an .ai then you can make anything from there, but only if you have illustrator, and the contest holder may not have illustrator but ask for it anyway because it's miost likely what printers would prefer (or a high res pdf, or even an eps).

it can be a bit overkill to ask for ALL those formats and it would be unlikely for most logos that jpeg would be the best format anway, but as a client has limited capability (hence why they're asking a designer ) If they're not sure what they might need the cover themselves by asking for (almost) everything.

I would personally prefer to provide an ai file and one web format (probably png-8) if they haven't got illustrator or are sure about optimising from the web

having just been asked to supplya logo and 5 sub logos in rgb/cmyk in illustrator AND pdf and on black and (white) transparent backgrounds i can sympathise

it depends on the logo - some people's logo have gradients in them - not good practice, but there you go.

Sure, but a PNG would be better for gradients, now that Infernet Exploder handles alpha transparency perfectly well.

Well, that's when you ask the client, "Why JPEG?" More to the point, you should always ask a client the intent for which work is being created. Could be the client wants the JPEG to put it online; long as it doesn't have gradients or transparency there's nothing wrong with that format, it's only "lossy" if you save over it.

Unless the client says "or", it's pretty safe to say it's "and". But again, ask.

I generally create raster formats as a TIF first and save as whatever I'm using it for as other files. For vector I usually export a PDF. From those it's not particularly difficult or time consuming to convert to any other commonly-used format.

Well, because of the limitation they might have, we should always ask if they didn't state it.
