I've used the search engines to give me better search results but there was no real active directory of 'freelancers to hire' for some of my projects. Looks like most of these directories are no longer updated.
Freelancer.com recently launched its massive directory of freelancers and so far this is the most active one. Do you know any other directories with updated list of active freelancers?

Actually, they are just a big directory. Instead of posting projects, the freelancers advertise themselves. Then you look for the right person to do the job, and hire him.
If you are looking for something that is neat and well paying then I would suggest odesk but even if you are looking something that is lucrative and does not require any kind of registration then go for Geekfreelancers
