Experiences of recruiting people with no feedback?

I have a job posting on Freelancer at the moment and I get alot of offers from people who have no feedback. I like to give jobs to smaller companies/individuals, I believe in giving people a chance and I'd rather my money went to supporting smaller organisations. However being new to Freelancer and seeing as I'm set to be spending quite a lot of money, I was wondering if anybody could offer any experiences or advice when using people with no feedback.

For me it depends on the project if its something that doesn't need special skills, then i guess it's worth a try. (I am one of those freelancers looking for a project, with no feedback, lol)

Hi Terocs,

Im also new to freelancer and also received a lot of bids from freelancers with no feedback.
The way i see it is, just because they have no reviews doesn't mean they don't have the skills, Maybe they are new to the site. If their approach to you is professional from the beginning and they can display a decent past work record i would be happy to employ them.

In reality they should be more determined to please you and complete your work to the best of their ability to gain some positive feedback.

Good luck
Dave

No feedback, ain't the biggest problem. Previous experience in another boards. The problem is competing with people who already have huge feedbacks, and I found that sometimes clients leave feedback just because they need good feedback to, this is also from another job board. So if you see excelent buyer looking forward to work in future doesn't mean anything. Usually project description and details of bid what people should look for, And only then for ratings and for exams taken. Also communicating before awarding project also helps to filter unqualified freelancers, or as in my case Clients who want their job to be done for free.

I think when you decided to hire that type of freelancers let them demonstrate on your project before you award it. Ofcourse I agree it will be great help for them and they must understand how important it is. So the must be willing to do that for free.

Interesting thread here. I am one of those freelancers who just started out and don't have a lot of feedback yet. It has been tough and frustrating. A lot of potential employers state they want only people with a lot of feedback. As mentioned above, just because a freelancer has a lot of feedback doesn't mean they are the best. When I post a bid I always include a message in the PMB to provide the project poster with some additional information about me. I also ask a lot of questions if I don't understand what the project requirements are. A lot of project descriptions are very vague (e.g. build me a website in Wordpress). That doesn't help us freelancers bid accurately. When I post a message for projects like that asking for more details the response rate is very low. So I have to ask those here who are posting jobs why they don't respond to questions from potential bidders? I think overall it is more professional to use the boards and messages to feel each other out. I have gotten messages like that and through the exchange both the potential employer and I get a good feel about the project. I have won a couple projects that way and I have also lost bids. Mainly because when I received the clarification it was either a project I didn't want to get involved with or the requirements were such that I felt I didn't have the necessary skills to deliver a quality product. Yes that's right. I will tell a potential employer I don't have the skills. I am professional and adult enough to know that I am not proficient in all aspects of web design, web development, PHP, CSS, etc. I am more of a generalist who knows enough to get most jobs done and done well. I do all work myself. I am not part of a company or syndicate or other group effort. I tell potential employers that upfront. I'm semi-retired myself so I started doing this to keep myself busy. I hope my contribution to this thread has enlightened some of the potential employers out there to give those of us with little to no feedback a chance. All you have to do is ask us questions to see if we can do the project for you or not. If a freelancer can't or won't answer your questions, even if they have 100+ reviews, then that should tell you something about them. Ok, off the soapbox. Thanks!

I must second Mr. Skclewis on this topic.

Being myself new to the freelancer.com platform, I have no review at all. I'm having problems getting chosen even though I obviously have the skills and even successfully completed some exams.

Not being able to write/talk to the client is a big disadvantage, as many of my (happy btw) clients started doing business because I spoke to them.
Some call it the warm fuzzy feeling, me it is just honesty, skill and respect.

This is a real problem, as even though I'm willing to become a Gold member, I can't possibly engage funds when I am _not_ well marketed.

So I must ask freelancer.com staff, how do I get going?

Hi rnoushi,

This is an excellent question.

If you’re looking for your first project on Freelancer.com, consider those projects with the TRIAL icon next to the listing. These projects can only be bid by freelancers with no feedback record on our site.

I have posted a guide to freelancers and you can read it here. This serves as a general guide. Remember, every freelancer has his or her unique formula for success.

I hope that helps. Goodluck and happy freelancing!

Once I was a freelancer with no feedback, too. So I need to create some mock-ups to get the job. I think it is very important to show my ability. Then I start to get my first job, and following with the 2nd and 3rd. I got 3 feedback on 1 month (I am an individual, not a team. So it needs a hard work.)
So my advice for you, give those freelancers with no feedback a chance to show their ability before making a judgment. If you like their work, you can hire them. As simple as that. Good luck!

If the project is critical and very important to you then you need to select big companies that can provide you with the quality you are looking for.
