Pinterest is very busy but early evidence shows that much of the traffic within is in the areas of craft and cooking. A lot of the user activity is insignificant, entailing repinning of each other's pins.
That said, pinning pages there won't do you any harm - but it may be a waste of time that could be better spent on other media eg Google+

I'm not sure if I agree. I think the bulk of Pinterest users are using it for social media aspects and enjoyment. There are some using Pinterest though for Internet Marketing/Business Purposes.
Pinterest is probably the fastest growing SB site….but personally I don’t think pinterest is a good place to get traffic…at least my personal experience with pinterest is not very good….i received very low traffic from them….that could be my site problem or “Title” problem…..but i found stumbleupon, reddit, dzone are better than Pinterest….

By low, do you mean low quality traffic or a low quantity of traffic, or both?
If I get low numbers of traffic from somewhere, but that traffic results in conversions, I may look into things further and try to figure out how to get more traffic from that source.
I think for an ecommerce store, Pinterest is a great marketing platform because most Pinterest users have a board containing items that are on their shopping wishlist.
If you are a service-based company, then infographics, quote images, the cover of your ebook and other forms of appealing visual content should also work very well on Pinterest.

I think my biggest headache in promoting with niche is the availablity to pin directly with multiple pictures

Pinterest as I see it personally is just as good as Instagram where I could add my own photos, infographics, and anything that is of interest to me which I could share to others.
If I take a look at it in ecommerce way, I'd share my business' products and whatever would be interesting to my followers in the hopes of capturing their attention and get a good amount of visits from the platform. It can be quite a challenge but everyone knows it is doable.

I agree with Wayne as long as you have appealing images I think it's a go. My wife "re-pinned" a pic of a blouse that she really liked and wanted me to see it. The next day she showed it to me and I told her to go ahead and go to the site and buy it, my treat. She said when she went to purchase it the blouse was sold out. So, I'd say that was good for whomever originally posted the blouse.

I've pinned a few drawings that I've produced from my blog on pinterest and they have been repined by others but I've not received any traffic from people clicking the hyperlink above the pictures
I think with the wealth of content people can browse from pinterest there isn't really much incentive for people to review the source websites and in that respect its pretty poor for improving traffic
Does pinterest pass on pagerank?

Repinning seems to be often done because the pin has a pretty picture, not because the page referenced has been visited. It does drive some traffic though, in a few areas, as I said above. Whether that traffic could be described as targeted or driven to buy, probably not in many cases.
The most repins I've heard of is 13,500 for one page (a Squidoo lens) and its traffic has gone up sharply, with several extra sales. Not bad for a 30 second pinning operation.

Pinterest works best for online retailers who have their OWN images of interesting products. It's not for people who only have images that the manufacturer provided them with.
