According to this web app, these are the current top ten most popular
ecommerce platforms, by number of sites found using each.

I was surprised at first by the numbers for VirtueMart.
But I suppose there are a lot of Joomla sites out there.

Also, not sure if it was a problem with the methodology but
I would have expected WordPress eCommerce or one of the the
completing WordPress plugins to make that list.

Of course, the trends are your friends too.
I would caution against anyone starting an osCommerce
shop these days. Even Zen Cart seems heading for the exits.

The Open Source players to watch are going to be
Magento, PrestaShop and OpenCart (although I detest
Magento CE, I might be persuaded to give their hosted Magento Go
a try in the future if they lift their game a bit).

Just out of curiousity I went back to that site to see how much had changed in the 6 months or so since the OP

VirtueMart 179,176 (up 8%)
Zen Cart　　　　87,148 (up 4%)
Magento 84,373 (up 27%)
osCommerce 68,489 (up 4%)
PrestaShop 44,540 (up 19%)
OpenCart 36,881 (up 44%)
Ubercart 27,059 (up 5%)
Yahoo Store 25,000 (down 10%)
Volusion 20,214 (down 4%)
Miva Merchant 19,723 (down 13%)

Should be obvious that Magento, PrestaShop and OpenCart are the stand out platforms.

I know quite a lot of sites using VirtueMart and would also rate them #1 in terms of usability and support.

There are probably a lot of old sites out there that were set up
more than 5 years ago on Zencart or Oscommerce.
If their numbers are growing at all it is slowly by comparison
with more modern platforms.

Never heard of abantecart. LOL.

Our customer base for ZenCart and oscommerce is dropping and customers switch to other platforms as well as we recommend new platforms that are newer and more active in development

Virtuemart is number 1??!?!?!

well, let's face it - the last few years has seen an abundance of 'developers and designers' rise up - seems like every other person is a 'developer' or 'designer.

And what I've noticed is most of these amateur 'developers' live off the Joomla philosophy.

Don't get me wrong; I am sure there are some skilled developers that can manipulate Joomla into a really solid website and I have seen some excellent Joomla sites so no disrespect intended to Joomla and its army of developers at all.

But with that being said; I have seen hundreds of terrible default installation Joomla sites with one click install virtuemarts and a "change header graphic" and there you go - a "fully fledge e-commerce site".

and guess what? check that domain a year and it's expired! surprised?

But in a way; this "statistic" will allow those who devote time and day into research and development to distinguish winning methods in delivering a successful website to clients as oppose to those developers who tend to equate e-commerce web design to collectable pokemon cards/ pogs / stamp collection (the-so-called-more-is-better-and-let-me-make=a-quick-buck-method).

I am guessing most of those virtuemart votes are from newcomers in the industry.

I don't think those are "votes".
I believe they are actual usage statistics.

But, yeah, I share your surprise as there are certainly better ecommerce solutions than VirtueMart.

What does surprise me is the sheer number of websites using shopping carts.

I got the impression that if you want to change anything on your store templates or code base, you need to pay their designers/developers to do it.
Might be wrong but thats the impression I had.

Also, does Volusion handle multilanguage, multicurrency sites?

Finally, their gateway options seem really only to cater to N.American based businesses.
