I tried forever to build an e-commerce site with WordPress, but in the end it was more trouble than it was worth. I installed the various plug-ins like Cart66 and WP e-commerce, and they all had issues with the various WordPress templates that I used. I agree with everyone else, use osCommerce. None of the free plug-ins for WordPress will really do the job you want without a whole bunch of trial and error.
osCommerce or other site builders that offer shopping cart integration are options to use to build an ecommerce website effectively and easily. Wordpress is also great, however, you need to know how to code yourself or have a budget to hire a good web developer.

I will prefer Woocommerce over others if you want to work on wordpress platform. This recommendation will change if you want to work on some other platform.
