I'll argue that if you want open source, proven security, scalability, localization, large community support, and excellent documentation, then Apache's OFBiz is the way to go. However, it will require greater technical ability than the php based systems.

There are quite a number of big users:

And, lot's of books:

If you want excellent e-commerce software, check out the Retailexpress.com.au website. They have excellent POS systems used by a lot of business in Australia.

I have just started researching about eCommerce business and after tying with many options and demos I think Magento eCommerce has the best interface out there. I have also seen there are so many extensions available for free to use and extend

There's a huge difference in advertising on FB, versus running ecommerce on FB. Ads on FB are very poor - search intent is certainly better than display for conversions.

BUT social shopping is entirely something else - are you making it easy for your *existing* customers to talk about you and your products with their friends?

You missed the point TOTALLY.

BOTH statements I quoted are incorrect yet both are correct as well.

Conversion rate and traffic quality depends upon whether the target site and the audience are a reasonable match, the better the conversions, the closer the match between ads and user demographics is.

Some products will do very well on "social sites" most will not.

Volusion will just eat your money in no time, especialy with the low bandwidth they offer, you will need to pay extra every month.
Their platform is based on Zen Cart, and if you're willing to learn or hire some one to customize it for you, I think it's a great solution.

I think you should try Open Cart. Very user friendly and easy to use.

If you think about e-commerce software you should look no further than Zen Cart – open source platform with wide array of every-day new modules developed by Zen users which are easy to install. Similar to Zen Cart is another open source platform, OS commerce.
Another great thing about open-source platforms is the most useful online community (forums) where you can ask and get answered about any doubt or difficulty you may experience with this kind of software.

Check out Quote Roller. It is a tool that allows you to create, send and track business proposals online. Besides, it has a huge library of free proposal templates. So you have just to select one to your taste and business. In 20 minutes you will create a business proposal that your potential client will be unable to refuse.

Just as it's important for the eCommerce web design to be easy to set up, it should also be easy to use. Creating, maintaining and updates of records should be easy and customizable. An eCommerce website that is intuitive and easy to navigate is an important hallmark of a good website.

I must say Virtuemart/Joomla combo is absolutely awful. Bloated / Generic.. it's like an all you can eat buffet at a back alley restaurant; so many features but all just bland and watered down.

I would strongly recommend Magento if you are / have skilled developers and clients willing to spend the money since even hosting can be costly for an efficient shopping experience.

Clients on a lesser budget would get opencart which is pretty solid too but just not feature rich as Magento is.

It depends on what platform it will be running. If its web application software, I go with Joomla, it has a lot of features, very manageable and it is also open source. But if its a desktop application, Netbeans is good.
