Related to my alternates to selling links thread. I am considering slapping a PayPal donation badge on my website. But I wanted to know if anybody knows anything about the following:
What kind of users usually choose to donate?
What is the best way to approch users; when asking for small donations?
I think that by providing quality content, and asking your visitors to help support your continuing efforts to bring them content you should be able to get some donations.
Hopefully that cuts across all demographics. But I'm not sure how useful the answer would be ... you don't want to change the focus of your site to cater to a group that seems more likely to make donations.
If it's anything like an even distribution, concentrate on bringing in more traffic, and some percentage of the increase should donate.
Be honest. Ask them to show their appreciation for your site by donating. It really all depends on what your site has to offer. If it’s a good service or has good content, then people may decide to show their support with a donation.
Few people will make donations unless it's a great cause to them. I wouldn't count on it as a source of income.
You either have a great site and are generating lots of traffic or you're not. If you are, you'll likely get donations, but probably not as much money as if you had put adsense or cj or some other kind of ad service on there.
